Our schools

During 2011-13, four elementary schools within Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) participated in LA Sprouts: Loreto Elementary, Sierra Park Elementary, Euclid Elementary and Monte Vista Elementary.

These schools were identified because they: 1) offered an after-school care program (“LA’s BEST”), 2) had a student body population ≥75% Latino, 3) had ≥75% of students participating in the free or reduced cost school meal program, 4) were located in neighborhoods of Northeast Los Angeles within 10 miles of University of Southern California (USC) Health Science Campus, 5) had expressed interest by the school principal and staff in having a school garden/hosting a gardening program, and 6) could make an administrative commitment to the project (including assisting with securing LAUSD approval, providing input in garden design and installation, and helping build parent support).

All 3rd-5th grade students at the schools who were enrolled in the LA’s BEST after-school care program were invited to join the LA Sprouts intervention.
